Mandate Natural Hairstyling and Curly Hair Education in Cosmetology Schools Nationwide
#NoCurlLeftBehind
- We want natural hairstyling and curly hair education to be part of the curriculum for all cosmetology schools in all 50 states.
- Help mandate it in all 50 states creating reciprocity for all cosmetology licensees.
As a cosmetologist, my training focused on manipulating texture rather than embracing and working with a client’s natural curls and waves. This approach left me ill-prepared to meet the needs of clients seeking to understand and embrace their natural hair textures. It took me many years to learn how to properly care for curly hair as a stylist primarily trained for straight hair.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated experience but reflects a systemic issue in our cosmetology education system. Many people without access to curl specialists resort to non-professional sources on social media, often leading them down paths that do not yield desired results.
The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are over 722,600 employed hairstylists and cosmetologists across the country (source: BLS). Imagine the impact if all these professionals were adequately trained in natural hairstyling techniques!
Therefore, we demand that all 50 states’ cosmetology boards include comprehensive education on natural hairstyling and curly hair care as part of their curriculum. Furthermore, we call for reciprocity among states regarding cosmetology licenses so that professionals can serve diverse communities nationwide without unnecessary barriers.
