The hot months have come and gone but curly hair never stops.
All-weather has effects on your curls, so make sure you’re not stopping the necessary curly care as the season’s change. Frizz may be easier to fight during the cooler months, but the cold air damages your curls a lot more than you’d expect… Which is why we’re giving you some key points to keep your curls healthy and thriving during the fall!

Moisturize your curls: We all know the importance of keeping your hair moisturized in the summer, but do you know how important it is to keep your curls moisturized in all weather
conditions? Cold, dry air dries out your hair as there is less moisture in the air. Without moisture, your curls will look limp and feel brittle. Ways to beat that are deep conditioning and leave-in conditioners. If you prefer oils in the winter as a lot of curly girls do to keep down flyaways make sure you clarify once a week to give curls a reboot. Follow up with a deep treatment before you put more oils on the hair since oil can block moisture from penetrating curls.

Sulfate-free shampoos: Also found in detergents and household cleaners, most shampoos are made containing sulfates. Sulfates strip the natural oils from your hair, making your hair dry and risking the chance of it getting brittle from lack of oils. Sulfate-free cleansers don’t lather as much as cleaners containing sulfates, which is actually better for curly hair. Sulfate-free shampoos also maintain the natural oils that your hair produces, which will promote a healthy scalp and healthy hair growth

Scalp treatments: There is nothing like a good exfoliating treatment to get dead skin and dirt particles off of your body. Do you know the benefits of exfoliating your scalp? Removing the build-up of products and oils will lower the chance of dandruff and scalp irritation. Regularly doing scalp treatments not only feels amazing for your head but it also helps to prevent future balding. To do a scalp treatment, use a gently exfoliating scrub and massage it into your scalp and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Not only will it take away the dead skin and build-up, but it will also moisturize your scalp. A 2 for 1 that you can’t resist!

Keeping up with trims: Between the cold air, product usage and heat styling, your ends don’t stand a chance of not splitting or drying out. Keeping up with trims every 3-4 months will ensure that your hair stays healthy and can continue growing in a healthy way. If you don’t trim your curls you’re giving your hair the opportunity to split and travel up the strand. This will make the strands thinner and more brittle, making your curls appear different and hurting the chances of hair growth.

Not washing every day: Not washing daily in the winter is crucial for healthy curls. Letting your hair air dry in the winter is damaging since the air is so dry, but we all know the damages that hot tools cause as well. A good way to avoid excessive damage is to not wash your hair every day! You’re eliminating a wash, which means better production of natural oils and not applying heat every day! You can keep your hair in protective styles such as braids or loose buns using a coil hair tie so your hair gets fewer creases while you sleep. Another effective method is using a satin or silk hair wrap to let your curls glide against for minimal breakage while you sleep.

Now, we’re not saying you need to do all of these things in one day!
Try to do deep conditioning and scalp treatment about once a week. (The scalp treatment maybe once every two weeks depending on how sensitive your scalp is)
Wash your hair as less frequent as possible, using sulfate-free shampoos to keep those natural oils intact.
Last but not least, don’t forget about your trims! We recommend every 3-4 months, or whenever you start seeing dead ends.
